Helsinki, Finland — ATMAS Group Oy, a Helsinki-based developer and global supplier of civil defence shelter protection and CBRN filtration systems, today announced a strategic partnership with Joel Naukkarinen — four-time World Indoor Rowing Champion, ten-time World Championship medalist, and Finnish Olympic contender. At the heart of the collaboration is the ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber System: a compact, high-performance carbon dioxide removal technology originally engineered for civil defence shelter environments, now deployed to optimize the air quality conditions in which Naukkarinen trains, recovers, and sleeps as he prepares for the Olympic Games.

From Shelter to Elite Sport: A Technology Built for Extreme Environments

The ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber System was designed to solve one of the most demanding challenges in civil defence engineering: maintaining breathable, performance-grade air quality inside sealed shelter environments without reliance on continuous external ventilation. In blast-protected or NBC-sealed shelters, managing CO₂ build-up is a critical life-safety requirement — and ATMAS engineered a system compact, reliable, and efficient enough to meet it.

That same technology — refined for compactness and energy efficiency — is now applied to a new kind of high-performance environment: the training and recovery spaces of one of Scandinavia’s elite athletes. The partnership with Naukkarinen represents the first deployment of the ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber in an elite sport context, and a compelling proof of the system’s versatility beyond its original civil defence application.

Why CO₂ Control Is a Performance Variable

Typical indoor environments accumulate CO₂ concentrations of 1,500–2,500 ppm — levels well above the performance-optimal threshold. Research consistently links elevated CO₂ to reduced cognitive sharpness, degraded sleep quality, and slower physiological recovery: precisely the factors that separate gold-medal performance from silver.

The ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber actively reduces indoor CO₂ to approximately 700 ppm — a level associated with optimal cognitive function and recovery efficiency. For Naukkarinen, whose Training Center Concept (TCC) is built on the premise that elite performance is won as much in recovery as on the water, this level of environmental control is a decisive competitive advantage.

ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber: Key Capabilities

•  Compact, shelter-grade design — engineered for enclosed, sealed environments

•  Active CO₂ extraction using specialized adsorption materials

•  Precise CO₂ regulation without continuous the need of fresh-air exchange

•  Stable indoor air quality independent of external ventilation conditions

•  Energy-efficient operation across living, sleeping, and recovery environments

“At ATMAS, excellence and professionalism are not just values — they are the standards by which we engineer our solutions. Our CO₂ Scrubber was built to protect lives in the most demanding shelter environments imaginable. Seeing that same technology now support a gold-medal contender like Joel Naukkarinen is a proud milestone — and a testament to Finnish drive, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.”

A Broader Application Horizon

While the ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber System was developed in response to civil defence requirements — including compliance with NBC shelter ventilation and air quality standards — this partnership highlights its potential across a much wider range of performance-critical environments: high-performance training facilities, medical recovery spaces, submarine and maritime environments, and any setting where air quality directly governs human output.

ATMAS Group continues to advance the development and deployment of its shelter and air quality technology portfolio globally, serving clients across Europe, Central Asia, and beyond.

Headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, ATMAS serves clients across Europe, the Middle East, and globally, working with leading manufacturing partners including ARCONIK International (Pune, India) the manufacturer of the CO2 Scrubber which was developed for and by ATMAS Group Oy.

About Joel Naukkarinen

Joel Naukkarinen (born 1993, Kouvola) is a competitive rower and a multiple World and European Championship medalist in both indoor rowing and coastal rowing. Trained as a physician and doctoral researcher in neurology, Naukkarinen applies a science based approach to optimizing athletic performance through his self developed Training Center Concept, where he can adjust and set the special environmental conditions in various ways including the ability to reduce CO₂ level. He is currently preparing for Olympic qualification, with the goal of winning a gold medal in coastal rowing at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
