Modern protective structures increasingly require a combination of ballistic protection, blast resistance, controlled ventilation and autonomous support systems in a compact, rapidly deployable format. The KIBO Stand-alone Shelter developed by Atmas Group is designed as a prefabricated family safe room for short-stay emergency protection.

Unlike conventional underground bunkers, KIBO is designed as a stand-alone protected structure that can be installed in a garden, yard or farm environment. Its external timber cladding allows the structure to visually integrate into a domestic environment rather than presenting the appearance of a conventional military shelter.

What is the KIBO Stand-alone Shelter?

The KIBO Family Safe Room is designed as a short-stay emergency or “panic” room intended to provide rapid protection during disasters and armed threats.

According to Atmas Group, the KIBO structure is based on ballistic-resistant security units and combines the protective structure with integrated systems for power, water, communications, ventilation and other emergency requirements.

The shelter is designed for applications where a protected room needs to be available without the construction complexity normally associated with a conventional bunker.

Atmas Group also identifies KIBO within its wider range of prefabricated shelters, bunkers and protected spaces, including other above-ground and underground solutions.

Ballistic protection

One of the defining characteristics of the KIBO shelter is its ballistic protection.

Atmas specifies a minimum UL 752 Level 10 ballistic rating and states that the structure resists 12.7 mm × 99 FMJ ammunition.

The shelter is therefore positioned as a protected structure rather than simply a conventional prefabricated garden building. The manufacturer also specifies bulletproof windows located behind the wooden strips around the shelter.

The combination of the protective structure and concealed external appearance allows KIBO to provide security while maintaining a residential-style exterior.

Blast protection

The published specification for KIBO states:

Minimum blast resistance: 3 psi @ 100 ms.

This is the manufacturer's specified blast-protection parameter for the shelter.

Blast protection is particularly relevant to protected spaces intended for emergency use because structural protection must be considered together with the ventilation openings and other penetrations through the shelter envelope.

KIBO therefore includes blast-protected ventilation points as part of its standard equipment.

For larger or differently configured protected structures, Atmas also provides prefabricated shelters and bunkers in above-ground and underground configurations.

CBRN air filtration

The KIBO standard equipment includes a CBRN air filtration system.

The manufacturer also specifies CBRN protection as an optional protection configuration

This is important because a protected room requires more than structural resistance when the potential threat includes contaminated air. The filtration system forms part of the shelter's integrated life-support and environmental-control architecture.

Atmas Group's wider portfolio includes dedicated CBRN / NBC filtration systems, air-management equipment and other protected-space ventilation technologies. The KIBO product page specifically lists the CBRN air filtration system among the shelter's standard equipment.

Autonomous electrical power

The standard KIBO equipment includes a 1,000 W power station.

The specified outputs are:

  • 2 × USB-C, 100 W

  • 2 × AC

  • 2 × 3A USB-A

  • Car Power Output

  • 2 × DC

The system is complemented by 2 × 380 W solar panels

This gives the shelter an integrated electrical-power component rather than requiring the protected room to depend exclusively on the property's normal electrical infrastructure.

The exact equipment configuration should nevertheless be considered according to the intended installation and operational requirements.

Water and emergency support

The KIBO standard equipment also includes a water station (dispenser)

The manufacturer additionally lists several optional systems intended to increase the shelter's functionality, including:

  • emergency-exit;

  • chemical-type WC and sink;

  • air conditioning;

  • full electrical installation.

The specified air-conditioning option is 12,000 BTU cooling/heating

This modular approach allows the KIBO configuration to be adapted to the intended use rather than treating every shelter as an identical installation.

Communication systems

Communication equipment is another part of the standard KIBO configuration.

The manufacturer specifies:

A pair of VHF/UHF radios with a roof antenna.

This provides an integrated radio-communication component within the shelter's equipment package.

The combination of communications, independent electrical power and air filtration is particularly relevant when the shelter is intended to function as a short-stay protected space during an emergency.

Lightning protection and grounding

The standard equipment includes both:

  • Lightning Protection installation

  • Earthing installation

These systems form part of the shelter's electrical and infrastructure configuration.

The presence of dedicated grounding and lightning-protection systems is important when the shelter incorporates electrical equipment, solar panels, communications antennas and other externally connected systems.

Concealed design and architectural integration

KIBO differs from many conventional bunkers and safe rooms through its external appearance.

The shelter uses timber cladding designed to make the structure visually resemble a garden building. Atmas explains that the purpose is to allow the protected structure to blend into a domestic environment such as a garden, yard or farm.

This design concept has several engineering and practical implications:

  1. The protected structure can be integrated into an existing property.

  2. Its external appearance does not necessarily resemble a conventional military bunker.

  3. Protective windows can remain concealed behind the wooden exterior strips.

  4. Ventilation and other functional systems can be integrated into the structure.

  5. The shelter can be positioned as a stand-alone facility rather than requiring a complete underground construction project.

Atmas specifically describes the garden-house appearance as a means of keeping the safe room inconspicuous within its surroundings.

Prefabricated and transportable construction

One of the practical characteristics of the KIBO concept is its prefabricated construction.

Atmas describes the KIBO as a transportable, highly secured prefabricated shelter. Its product information explains that the installation concept is intended to avoid much of the planning and construction complexity associated with conventional shelters.

The manufacturer states that the shelter can be delivered to the property and installed using a crane.

This makes the KIBO concept fundamentally different from a conventional concrete bunker that requires excavation, reinforcement, formwork and extensive on-site construction.

Standard and optional equipment

The published equipment configuration can be summarized as follows:

Standard equipment

  • 1,000 W power station

  • 2 × 380 W solar panels

  • Water station/dispenser

  • Pair of VHF/UHF radios with roof antenna

  • CBRN air filtration system

  • Lightning protection

  • Earthing installation

  • Bulletproof windows behind wooden strips

  • Blast-protected ventilation points

Optional equipment

  • Emergency-exit WC and sink

  • Chemical-type WC

  • Air conditioning

  • Full electrical installation

  • CBRN protection configuration

These items are based specifically on the manufacturer's current KIBO specification rather than assumptions about what a generic safe room should contain.

Why the integrated approach matters

A safe room is not simply a reinforced enclosure. Its effectiveness as a protected space depends on the relationship between the structure and its supporting systems.

For KIBO, the manufacturer's configuration combines:

Ballistic protection + blast protection + controlled ventilation + CBRN filtration + electrical power + water + communications + lightning protection.

This integrated approach is one of the principal characteristics of the KIBO Stand-alone Shelter.

The same philosophy is reflected across Atmas Group's wider portfolio, which combines air filtration and management, blast and ballistic protection, protected openings, prefabricated shelters and specialist shelter equipment

KIBO compared with conventional shelters

The KIBO concept is particularly suited to projects where the customer requires a stand-alone family safe room without creating a large underground structure.

Its published capacity is 5–6 adults, while its external dimensions are 2.00 × 4.00 × 2.25 m and its weight is 7,500 kg

For larger requirements, Atmas Group offers other prefabricated and modular shelter concepts, including concrete and underground structures that can be expanded or customized according to project requirements.

Therefore, KIBO should be considered a specific solution for a compact protected space rather than a universal replacement for every type of civil-defense shelter.

Applications

Based on the manufacturer's description, KIBO is intended primarily as a Family Safe Room for short-stay emergency protection.

Potential property environments include:

  • private gardens;

  • residential yards;

  • farms;

  • domestic properties;

  • other locations where a stand-alone protected room is required.

Atmas also positions KIBO within its wider portfolio of prefabricated shelters and protected structures for private, industrial and institutional applications.

Conclusion

The KIBO Stand-alone Shelter represents an integrated approach to prefabricated protected-space engineering. Its published configuration combines a 2.00 × 4.00 × 2.25 m external footprint, 7,500 kg weight and capacity for 5–6 adultswith minimum UL 752 Level 10 ballistic protection, stated resistance to 12.7 mm × 99 FMJ, and minimum blast resistance of 3 psi @ 100 ms

Its standard equipment further incorporates a 1,000 W power station, 2 × 380 W solar panels, water station, VHF/UHF communications, CBRN air filtration, lightning protection, earthing, bulletproof windows and blast-protected ventilation points

The result is a compact prefabricated family safe room designed to combine structural protection with essential support systems while maintaining an appearance suitable for integration into a residential environment.
